Peridot is the Birthstone of August.
Most Gemstones are formed by the earth’s crust. Like Diamonds, peridot is formed much deeper in the earth’s mantle and is carried to the surface by volcanoes. The color ranges from a brown-green color to yellowish green to pure green. The intensity and tint depends on how much iron is contained in the crystal structure. most valued color is a deep, clear limey-green.
Peridot is the national gemstone of Egypt. It was mined on Jon’s Island in the Red Sea 3500 years ago and called called the ‘Gem of the Sun’. It is believed that the gemstones worn by the Queen Cleopatra were Peridot, not not Emeralds..
Nodules of peridot are found in volcanic rocks all over the American Southwest.Today, most of the Peridot supply comes from Arizona; other sources are China, Myanmar, and Pakistan.
