ROCK TRIVIA: THE GREEN GARNETS
Garnet can be found in just about every color, even rarely blue, ( a.k.a. color change Garnet ) Up until the mid 1800's, Garnets were available almost exclusively in the orange, red and purple colors. In 1868 the Demantoid Garnet was found in northwest Russia. Later finds brought us Tsavorite, Spessartite, and Malaya Garnets.
In the 1960's, a variety of of Grossular Garnet called Tsavorite was discovered in the northeast mountains of Tanzania, near the Tsavo East National Park. The color is a deeply saturated emerald to forrest green. Tsavorite has a high refraction of light so it has a beautiful luster and sparkle.
Another green from Africa, the Merelani Mint Garnet was first found in the Merelani Hills also in Tanzania. It is also a Grossular Garnet like the Tsavorite, but the color is a lighter either blueish or yellowish green.
Demantoid is a green variety of the Andradite Garnet. It found in the Ural mountains of Russia. It is a vivid pure green color with remarkable brilliance and fire, It became a favorite of the Russian elite during the late 1800’s and early 1900’s.
Pictured, an antique Russian Demantoid Garnet Brooch Pin circa 1885. The stones have "horsetail" inclusions typical for Russian Uralian demantoids. This brooch was made in Perm, the biggest city in the Ural Mountains, the region where Russian demantoids are mined.
