FIRST FAIRTRADE GOLD CERTIFICATION IN AFRICA
Gold mines in Uganda will soon undergo Fairtrade audits in hope of achieving recognised standards for their gold. This would be the first time in Africa. This would stop greedy middlemen from taking advantage of the miners’ illegal status and paying them far less than the gold is worth.
It will allow profits to be re-invested into the mining community cooperatives, raising the standard of living, paying for education of the children and providing healthcare to the communities.
It will also improve the processing safety by removing the necessity for the miners to use chemicals which are hazardous to the miners and to their environment.
