ROCK TRIVIA: AQUAMARINE
Aquamarine is in the Beryl family of stones with the Emerald ( green) and Morganite (pink). beryl. Aquamarine’s color range is from blue to green-blue. The gem’s most valuable color is a dark blue to slightly greenish blue with good intensity. In general, the purer and more intense the blue color, the more valuable the stone. Most aquamarine is a light greenish blue. Aquamarine is pleochroic, which means it shows different colors in different crystal directions—in the case of aquamarine, one is almost colorless and so the the blue is always the cutting orientation.
In the United States, Aquamarines can be found in central Colorado and in the Big Horn Mountains of Montana. Brazil has a number of fine quality deposits, in fact the largest aquamarine of gemstone quality ever mined was found there in 1910.. Aquamarine is also found in Colombia, Zambia, Madagascar, Malawi, Tanzania and Kenya.
