ROCK TRIVIA: FOSSILIZED CORAL ( a.k.a. Agatized Coral )
Corals have been around for almost 500 million years. They lived in warm shallow waters and over time were buried as land surfaces shifted and oceans levels changed.
Over long periods of time the original tissues were replaced molecule by molecule with a mineral or minerals. This replacement product is generally agate. Sometimes the contrast between the soft tissues and the skeletal remains of the corals is remarkable as different minerals such as silica, iron and manganese impart different colors to the stone.
Pictured is Indonesian Fossil Coral.
